The appropriate time for surgery for children is when they are between 5 and 6 years old. At that time, the ear already develops 90 % of the adult size and is already fully formed.
Otoplasty can correct a defect in the ear structure that is present at birth that becomes apparent with development or it can treat misshapen ears caused by injury.

Ear correction surgery is a straightforward procedure that takes no more than one hour. It’s performed under local anaesthetic, so there’s no hospital stay and a fast recovery time.
Otoplasty refers to any ear correction procedure that involves removing or reshaping the cartilage that makes up your ears. The procedure can ‘pin back’ ears that stick out, make larger ears smaller or improve the ears’ appearance if they’ve become misshapen from activities like rugby or boxing.
You will know in advance which ear correction method your surgeon will use. Usually this will involve making incisions behind your ears and then removing and/or reshaping the cartilage, so any scars will be hidden. Most of our patients leave the hospital within a few hours of their procedure.
Discomfort immediately following ear surgery is normal and can be controlled with pain medication. There may be an itchy feeling under bandages. It is essential that bandages remain intact and are not removed, for any reason. Failure to do so may result in loss of some of the correction and may require a secondary surgery. We’ll remove the bandage at your follow-up appointment and you might then need to wear a smaller headband at night for a few more weeks until your ears are fully healed.
